Why I’m Starting a Plus-Size Luxury Swimwear Brand And What I’ve Learned So Far as a First-Time Founder
Hi, I’m Sara, and I’m the founder of Sera Swimwear, a new plus-size luxury swim and resortwear brand. I’m building this brand in public, from the first sketches to the final fit samples, and I wanted to share the story behind why I started and what I’ve learned so far on this wild, exciting journey.
The Problem: Beautiful Swimwear Shouldn’t Stop at Size 14
For years, I struggled to find swimwear that made me feel like myself, elegant, confident, and comfortable. Shopping for vacations felt more like settling: compromising on fit, dealing with poor quality, or choosing between styles that didn’t reflect my taste.
And I knew I wasn’t alone. So many plus-size women I’ve spoken to have shared the same frustration: we’re tired of swimwear that feels like an afterthought. We want style, support, and substance. We want designer-level pieces that accentuate the best parts of ourselves and fit properly. I don’t want my bits hanging out of the bottom of my suit!
That’s why I’m creating Sera Swimwear.
The Vision: Designer Swim and Resortwear for Curvy Women
Sera Swimwear is about reimagining luxury for women who’ve been excluded from the conversation for too long. We’re designing elevated, flattering swimwear and resort pieces in sizes 12-30, with a focus on fit, fabric, and timeless design.
Our mission is simple: to make plus-size women feel seen, celebrated, and stunning, whether at the pool, the beach, or the rooftop brunch that follows.
Expect premium materials, fashion-forward silhouettes, and thoughtful details that make a difference, because luxury should include everyone.
The Journey: Building in Public as a First-Time Founder
I’m not a fashion executive or a serial entrepreneur. I’m a first-time founder learning as I go, talking to patternmakers, testing samples, figuring out fulfillment and fit and fabrics (and figuring out how to keep my inbox under control).
It’s overwhelming, energizing, and incredibly personal.
I’m sharing this journey openly because I want to invite you into the process, not just as a future customer, but as part of the community shaping this brand from day one.
